Small Mammal Ecology and Trapping

This course is suitable for ecologists or members of conservation groups wanting to gain handling and identification experience of small mammals prior to undertaking small mammal surveys. The course will cover the planning of a survey (including how to safely place traps), safe handling of small mammals, and identification in the field. Fieldwork sessions will include preparation of traps, setting traps overnight in a variety of habitats, and collection the following morning.

Course outcomes:
• Safe placement of traps in appropriate habitats.
• Safe handling of small mammals.
• Ability to identify small mammal species in the hand.
• Licence requirements for conducting small mammal surveys.
